[ Putting H2 & fuel cell science / technologies into the science / technology syllabuses ]
Introduction:
The title name was given as above, because it signifies where this educational program is leading to ,and its historical parallel of significance. In year 2010 GM(US)/Honda Japan will commercially release the hydrogen fuel cell vehicle (FCV). A new automotive technology at 50%-70% efficiency, running on hydrogen being a new zero(0) emission renewable fuel. This event is compared to 1969 and the landing on the moon. The educational program thus "steps" students towards their positive futures. The program specifically deals with hydrogen and fuel cell science/technology education, at primary school, high school, college and university levels. One of the main educational themes is we are currently moving away from the historical ways of extracting energy from inefficient and polluting combustive processes(eg transport, stationary power plants etcetera) to efficient and clean electrochemical (non-combustive) processes to produce the energy we need for our futures(electrochemical engines). " ©
The program came to be based on the observed progression and research that has taken place over the last decade, producing significant outcomes. The program is driven by the same forces driving hydrogen and fuel cell science/engineering technologies, being pollution, global warming and energy security. There are three(3) hydrogen fuel cell powered buses currently operating in Perth Western Australia, with an AUD$67m federal program current for ninety(90) fuel cell buses for Australia with hydrogen depots by year 2008.Australia already has its own stationary solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) power plant for housing and small industry. Micro and portable fuel cells will begin powering portable electronic products from Jan 1 2007(see below).
Much work now needs to be done in Australia and around the world to educate students of the overarching principle of "The era of non-combustion" is upon us now, and will accelerate from year 2007,and be significantly highlighted in year 2010.To observe the progression of the program over time goto Fairvale High School (NSW-Australia).If you need to know how to integrate this program with your existing science/technology syllabus, then follow the link to suggestions by Dr Bennett (GM) Office of The Board of Studies (NSW-Australia).

Social impacts of Global Warming: Our children over the last decade have been observing more information on the impacts of global warming. The impacts particularly of late have graphically been depicted on national television and the internet, on numerous occasions. Glaciers melting and sliding into oceans along with pessimistic reports from eminent scientists, "paint " a gloomy picture of the future for our children to see. No wonder the students are asking questions regarding the efforts being done to counter global warming. The socio-economic impacts of global warming is thus something Australia should investigate as soon as possible.
The FCIA has Australia's first micro hydrogen fuel cell power source(below), powering a small bike light as below left. The A2 torch below is now commercially available
, whilst all other units below are pre-commercial. As a power source these micro hydrogen fuel cells supply much more power than batteries and do NOT need a power socket, potentially liberating billions of portable electronic devices over the next decade. Superior sustained power supply to products giving convenience of use along with being environmentally friendly, make these new micro hydrogen fuel cells a very strong counter to global warming.AWARDS:

There are now too many schools in other states showing interest ,to continually list and update this information: Progressing throughout Australia as at 29/07/06.
Suggested timeframe for teachers:
2006 : "MOONSHOT 2010 -The Australian Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Science/Technologies Education Program" begins; The cluster of twenty[20] high schools in NSW now have model hydrogen fuel cell cars + books and instruction from the FCIA, as at November 2005.The cluster is a representative cluster that can be reproduced anywhere in Australia, with variations designed by teacher/s groups and so on, for their own versions. To begin in year 2006 some planning needs to be done in the last three(3) months of year 2005.Is is advised that all high school teachers should factor this in their classes covering all years (7-12)for the start of year 2006. The representative cluster of twenty[20] high schools in Western Sydney NSW as above, will be given standard fuel cell equipment for project work and competitions during year 2006.NSW state funding is expected in Feb.2006(Now officially confirmed Jan06) so such equipment can be purchased. Sponsorship funding is currently being sort for the regional primary school connection starting early in year 2006.Primary schools will be given the standard new model fuel cell car lab kits along with instruction by the FCIA. Granville Tafe College will be contacted in early Feb.2006,activating the entire Tafe College system in NSW. Major project work along with new course development will start with Tafe Colleges and universities in year 2006 in NSW. Suggested learning outcomes for cluster groups of schools in Australia
2007 [Jan 1]: Micro-fuel cells will be available in demonstration numbers during year 2006.Cheaper disposable units to power portable devices at ~AUD$25 should be available from MTI, called the Mobion. There will be other micro-fuel cell demonstrations from other manufacturers. Students will see these demonstration units, reinforcing their learning. In year 2007 there will be a global release of the micro-fuel cell to power mobile phones, laptops, cameras and so on. The program/s in year 2007 can involve the more powerful micro-fuel cells in new projects in addition to the annual car competition. These can involve solar renewable energy fuel cell hybrid power models to larger projects like fuel cell powered wheel chairs,go-karts,forklift trucks with local TAFE colleges and many more. The program should be going across Australia at this time. From March 2007 the curricula for high schools will be raised by the FCIA in NSW, to The Board of Studies and to other states and territories.
2008 : Competitions continue at scaled levels, OEMs begin real development in regions involving high schools students, innovative cultures start to be sustained, larger fuel cells become available to power schools and other buildings, trial transport demonstrations programs are in their second year, and fuel cell buses are in operation in Sydney and the west.Fuel cell vehicles as well start in commercial fleets by business. New curricula alterations are designed and implemented in NSW and other states in Australia.
2009 : Honda Japan may release their hydrogen fuel cell vehicle (FCV) this year.
Have you ever had to roll up your windows to keep from choking on the exhaust from an older car in front of you? Did you wish that car was a Zero-Emission Vehicle (ZEV) like the extraordinary Honda FCX?The only emission that the FCX produces is water vapor. That's because a revolutionary technology allows the FCX to power its motor with electricity generated from a hydrogen-oxygen chemical reaction. With a maximum output of 80 horsepower and 201 Lb.-ft. of torque, the FCX has responsive acceleration that is ideal for city driving. Plus, the FCX is practical for a wide range of typical daily driving trips in today's world. In July 2002, Honda's FCX was certified by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the California Air Resources Board (CARB), making it the first and only fuel cell car in history to be approved for commercial use. CARB and the EPA have also certified the FCX as a Zero-Emission Vehicle (ZEV), Tier-2 Bin 1.The Honda FCX is the world's most advanced FCV in regular daily operation and the first hydrogen-powered FCV to be certified by CARB and the U.S. EPA, as a 2003 model in July 2002. Honda started fuel cell research in the 1980's and has been road testing vehicles in the United States and Japan since 1999.
2010 : Moonshot 2010 - World Hydrogen & Fuel Cell Science/Technologies Education program begins. This marks "The beginning of the end for the combustion engine".http://www.detnews.com/2005/autosinsider/0501/09/-54837.htm
